Bolivia’s general information

  • Currency: Boliviano. Better handle cash.

Dollars are more accepted than euros.

Debit and credit cards are accepted at most businesses in major cities. Generally, in the towns there is no ATM service or payment with debit or credit cards.

  • Main languages: Spanish, Quechua and Aymara
  • Telephony & WiFi: You can purchase SIM cards with a local number for your stay.

Most of the hotels in the cities have free Wi-Fi service.

Hotels, lodges or hostels far from cities have quite limited WiFi coverage, or in some cases they do not have WiFi service, for example in some places on the Isla del Sol, the region of Los Lipez and Lagunas

  • Airports and air connections

The main airport is Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, with direct connections to Madrid with AirEuropa and Iberia; Buenos Aires, Miami, São Paulo, Lima with Boliviana de Aviación; Santiago de Chile and Lima with Latam; Panama with Copa, Montevideo with Panair and São Paulo with Gol.

El Alto International Airport in La Paz, at 4050m is the entry point to the western Andean region of Bolivia. It allows direct connections to Lima and Santiago de Chile with Latam, Bogotá with Avianca mainly.

The other main airports are in Cochabamba: Airport Jorge Wilstermann, Alcantarí in Sucre, Joya Andina in Uyuni and in Rurrenabaque with the Regional and Tourist Airport for those who will visit the Madidi National Park.
