Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku Culture

According to the official Unesco site, the archaeological site of Tiwanaku or Tiahuanaco, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 2, 2000 “for the exceptional archaeological and cultural value of the lithic ruins of Tiwanaku, from where a human group contributed decisively in the research and development of construction technologies, agriculture, cattle raising, plant and animal fiber weaving”.

The Pirámide de Akapana, the Kalasasaya Temple, and Puerta del Sol are some of the main structures found on the site. There are also the Lithic and Ceramic Museums, with the imposing 7-meter-high Bennet monolith are a sample of this mysterious site, where you cannot miss the famous site of Puma Punku or “Puerta del Puma”, located just 10 minutes from the site, very well known for the many theories about its origin.

Have you heard about the theories stating that Puma Punku has alien origins?

The most intriguing thing about Puma Punku is the stonework, as the huge blocks (weighing several tens of tons) fit perfectly together without the use of any mortar. The precision and technique that was used is truly amazing, as not even a razor blade can slide between the stones.
